Shiraz

Shiraz is one of the biggest cities in Iran and most significant city at the center of Fars province at the height of 1486 m above the sea level, located in the Zagros mountainous area, a highly important protection for the strategic location of Shiraz. Shiraz consists of 3 districts, ”Arzhan“, “Zaraghan“ , ”Markazi“, six cities and 12 rural districts. Shiraz name has been explored in the Achaemenid inscriptions in Persepolis.

This city has been known as the most significant tourism center, the 6th populous city, the cultural capital of the country, 2nd literary city in the world, the 3rd religious city, the 3rd holy shrine of Iran and the city of poetry, wine and flower. The tombs of several poets such as Hafez and Sa’adi placed in Shiraz where embraces a major part of Iran’s ancient history, historical, cultural, religious and natural attractions. 

Placing in the central zone of south Zagros and a partly fertile area, the social and economic structure of Shiraz has been turned into a natural setting for nomads such as Ghashghaei, the farmers and residents to exchange local commodities. This city has also been located in the way of the commercial roads to south ports such as Bushehr, but this role has been faded out by establishing the railway network to other ports of Iran. Administrators and military centers are among the other causes the city to be glorious. Shiraz is economically dependent on industry, significant factories, agriculture and magnificent handicrafts .Shiraz residents speak in Shirazi accent of Persian language and most of them are Shia.

The beautiful city of Shiraz, best known as the city of poetry, the city of orange and bergamot, has been added to the list of UNESCO world cities, as the World City of Handicrafts, after evaluations by the World Crafts Council. The pleasant capital city of Fars province is one of the main metropolitans in Iran that has become one of the most popular and mostly visited tourism destinations due to its many historical, cultural, literary, religious and natural attractions. The first historical documents about this city indicate its centrality and importance during Sassanid period. And after that, we can see its continual presence in the literary and historical documents related to different Islamic periods. It is no wonder that the name of Shiraz has always been accompanied by the concepts of art, culture and peace. The same features made Shiraz one of the few cities which were spared both the Mongol onslaught and Timur’s attack.

Choosing Shiraz as the capital of Iran and establishing the great cultural complexes with support of a courtesy and righteous ruler, Zand dynasty added to the glory and grandeur of Shiraz. Vakil complex is one of the most important public buildings of Zand in this city that we can find today various kinds of Shiraz’s handicrafts in its bazar. Handicraft products of Shiraz is too various to be introduced as a single-field city. The production of handicrafts in all fields considering the standards of quality, authenticity, historical background, high quality, innovation and creativity indicate the special attention of Shiraz’s artists and artisans to the handmade artworks and a deep relationship between handmade arts in this region and the individual and social life of its warm people.

Wooden handicrafts like inlay, that may be more famous than all other handicrafts in shiraz, wood carving, marquetry, pottery and ceramic handicrafts like pottery making, mosaic faience, Cuerda seca, metal works like silver works and chasing, handwoven products like Kilim and Gabbeh, mat weaving, along with traditional glass blowing with a long history, felting, stucco, Giveh weaving and miniature painting that highlighted the name of Shiraz among the schools of Persian paintings from a long time ago, made Shiraz an awarded world city of handicrafts in 2020, along with three other cities and villages of Iran.
